The Prismatic Star foundation papers and strip piecing processes were designed by Quiltworx in 2014. As one of our most popular patterns ever, we continually have to remake and update instructions. In 2017, we answered the requests of many customers to increase the size of this design. During that effort, Judy learned a few things about the pattern and made some changes. She increased the size of the diamonds slightly to allow for a larger sashing strip. And, she modified the way the sashing strips were sewn to the quilt in different rounds to make assembly easier. The updated diamond blocks have been incorporated into this version of the pattern. So, if you are in a workshop and your pattern looks different than your neighbors, don’t be concerned! Your quilt will assemble a bit different than theirs and also be slightly larger when it’s done. But, otherwise, it is the same technique and same quilt! The layout is 68” x 68” and includes (24) diamonds and a background.
In 2022, we mostly needed a new cover sheet. However, after repeated requests from our customers on how to increase the size of our quilts, we have added a section to the instructions that covers how to go from a 68” quilt, to any of our increased sizes, including 80”, 91”, 100”, 99” and 118” square. You do not need to purchase any introduction booklets for mixers to get final assembly information any longer. Everything you need is included in this booklet, including the additional assembly pieces and what you need to purchase for each size to get to the size quilt you want.
Compatibility: This pattern is NOT compatible with the originally published Prismatic Star (anything dated prior to 2018) due to the change in size of the sashing strips. It is compatible with the blocks in the Prismatic Star Queen.
There are many ways to expand your Quiltworx designs into larger sizes with compatible border packages. If listed, you should purchase the Introduction Booklet for the size quilt you want. Then, you should select expansion borders of your choice. The following information explains ways to expand your quilt.
- To expand the 68″ to a 99″ Queen, purchase one of the 242D borders.
- COMING 2023! To expand the 68″ to an 80″ Wall Quilt, add a 281D border of your choice.
- COMING 2023! To expand an 80″ to a 118″ King, add a 281D Border, then a 118″ King Border of your choice.
- To expand the 68″ to a 91″ Queen, you’ll need to purchase (3) additional diamond packages for a total of 24 diamonds.
